Let’s get growing!
Terrain Tending & Soil Stewarding 101 is a good starting point for anyone wanting to learn basic gardening techniques.
Each class is adapted to the age, skill level and interest of the students in attendance, with discussions and hands-on practice of the topics covered.
Let’s take a look at Terrain Tending and Soil Stewarding - why it’s so important and the value it brings to us as humans!
Terrain Tending
Bringing awareness to our surroundings, specifically the ground, typography, diversity and texture of soil/dirt units and characteristics, is a priority if you want to succeed as a grower. Assessing the culture of the land/surroundings for growing plants and water management is so important in the garden that it ends up guiding us in our daily lives as humans! Just as important is the layout and flow of the garden and its parts, which are dependent on purpose. Knowing your purpose and understanding your environment is critical in tending to the garden terrain, as it is in tending to the landscape of your life.
Soil Stewarding
Soil stewarding is a central human responsibility. It's about increasing soil organic matter (SOM) by sequestering carbon, creating more macro and microorganism activity, and forming a deeper connection with mother nature so that we live and feel better. To be human is to be in relationship with the fertility of our soils, and in harmony with our ecology. The purpose of creating good soil structure is to improve plant life, crops, medicine, and mitigate climate change. Our job as gardeners/farmers is to steward the rhythms of inputs and outputs within the growing environment so our crops/end-results are fruitful.
